Nemesvita is to be found at the joint of the Tapolcai basin and the Keszthelyi mountains, leaning up on the Eastern foot of the mountain, 3 kms awayfrom the lake Balaton, near highway 84. The prefix in its name comes from medieval times but humans had been present already in the Neolithic. The two poplar tree strings are one of the things the citizens are much proud of. In 1890 there were 1166 citizens living here but due to different historic events in the 20th century this number has been reduced to 420 people. Nemesvita lies in a valley surrounded by forests, the houses are built in the hillside. The citizens were given a hard time by the gullets that developed from the heavy rains, so they put up supporting walls against them. That resulted in a picturesque view of the town with winding roads and houses above each other. The spectacles are some gentry mansions that remained unharmed and ethnical houses with distinctive pinnacle ornamentations, and also a Roman Catholic church, rebuilt in baroque style in 1778. If you would like to take walks and go on outings, follow the green sign that leads you in the depth of the Keszthelyi hill. August 20th is a big feast of the town, and the vintage feast takes place every year on the first Saturday of September. At the end of the town theNemesvita Botanic Garden and the Study Forest can be found. |
